🧵 To prewash or not to prewash—that is one of quilting’s great debates!
I decided to do a little fabric experiment. Before washing, I took pictures and carefully measured the fabric so I can see exactly what changes. I’ll be checking for shrinkage, color bleeding, texture changes, and anything else that surprises me.
Prewashing can be an important part of preparing fabric for a quilt, especially when the finished quilt will receive edge-to-edge longarm quilting. Different fabrics may shrink or behave differently, so this is something many quilters think about before starting a project.
Next, I’ll wash and dry the fabric, measure it again, and share the after pictures. Will it shrink a little, a lot, or hardly at all? We’re going to find out!
Do you prewash your quilting fabric, or do you prefer to use it straight from the store? Let me know—I’m curious what other quilters do.
